Transparent feed algorithm with user-controlled composition settings

Submitted by sudo · Apr 1, 2026

User story

As a professional using the platform daily, I want to understand why specific content appears in my feed and be able to configure the feed's composition to match my actual interests, so that my time on the platform is spent on content that is relevant to me rather than what maximises engagement metrics.

Description

Every piece of content in the feed should carry a visible, plain-language explanation of why it was surfaced. Users must have a settings panel with granular controls over feed composition: chronological vs ranked, content types, connection proximity, topic weighting. Changes must take effect immediately and persist across sessions.

Acceptance criteria

  1. Each feed item has a "Why am I seeing this?" link that opens a plain-language explanation
  2. Feed settings panel includes: sort order (chronological / ranked), content types (posts / articles / job changes / reactions), connection proximity (1st / 2nd / 3rd degree), and topic weights
  3. Feed settings changes apply immediately — no restart or cache delay
  4. Chronological option is always available and not hidden behind account tiers
  5. "Not interested" feedback on a post demonstrably reduces similar content within 24 hours
  6. The platform publishes a public summary of ranking signals updated whenever the algorithm changes significantly
  7. Feed composition does not vary based on demographic data (verified by independent audit annually)

Original request

The feed algorithm should be transparent. I want to understand why I'm seeing what I'm seeing and have real control over it.
